Pet Policy – Traveling with your Small Dog or Cat

Except for Service Animals, which follow a different pet policy, Amtrak Cascades trains allow small pets onboard under the following conditions:

Pet Eligibility

Small dogs and cats that meet the following conditions are welcome:

• Should be at least 8 weeks old
• Should weigh no more than 20 lbs (including the carrier)
• Pet limit: one pet per passenger
• A fee of $26 applies
• Must be kept in an approved carrier

Pet Carrier Requirements

Pets are required for everyone’s comfort aboard Amtrak:

• Maximum dimensions: Length of 19” and width of 14” while height is 10.5” or less
• Must have ventilation and be leak-proof
• Pet must comfortably fit in the pet carrier and be able to rotate 360°
• Pet must remain in the carrier compartment
• Pet carrier must be placed on the ground alongside the passenger’s seat not in the seat

Note: Pet carrier is included in the number of luggage allowed.

Restrictions

For everyone’s safety and comfort, pets are restricted in the following ways:

• When the journey lasts more than 7 hours (including connections)
• For trips to Canada
• For travel in Business Class
• In Thruway bus service
• In the company of minors traveling alone
• On multi-ride or commuter passes
• On journeys not involving dogs or cats (other types of pets forbidden)

Booking & Boarding Process

Make a Pet Reservation

Reservations can be done online, over the phone, or at the station and should be made together with the passenger ticket.

At the Station

• I will be at the staffed station for check in at least a half an hour early
• In cases where a conductor will be stationed at an unstaffed location, they will have to check if the user meets the criteria and then will offer them a waiver to sign.

Onboard Rules

• Do not lose sight of your pet
• Remove the pet from the carrier only at the end of the trip
• Leave the carrier at the legs of your seat, it should not be placed in the aisle or on different seats
